Mystery in the Trees - Penguin
Perhaps Warrnambool’s most famous native animal, little penguins nest on Middle Island (also known as Penguin Island) just off our coast from about August to April each year.
Foxes found the island in the 2000s, almost wiping out the colony. In a world-first, maremma dogs were used to guard the colony.
Since then, there have been no more reported fox attacks and the colony is recovering.
This project was made into the 2015 film, Oddball, starring Shane Jacobsen.
